Seeking 1 – 4 GRAFFITI ARTISTS TO APPEAR ONSTAGE
DURING DANCE PERFORMANCES AT THE MOORE THEATRE

Spectrum Dance Theater performs March 23/24 at the Moore Theatre. One piece, Short Dances, Little Stories, requires a graffiti artist to paint on the backdrops during the performance (35 minutes). The selected artist(s) will be required to attend a tech rehearsal on March 22, a dress rehearsal on March 23, and the two performances on March 23 and 24. Details TBD.
SELECTED ARTIST(S) WILL BE PAID AN HONORARIUM.
PERFORMANCE PAINTING MATERIALS WILL BE SUPPLIED.

I was enthralled by the Tank Girl Covers, just imagining this dayglo Acid /Punk scene happening in London and how much i was missing being in Albuquerque. I was in Albuquerque last week, it was a strange homecoming. My Grandmother died after a lengthy battle with cancer......

I had lost my grandfather when I was very young and My great grandmother when I was very 19 y.o. without a clue. But i had yet to experience the true pain of loss before this family tragedy. I feel that the world has changed and nothing will ever be the same. There is a bittersweet thing about death is that you finally get family to stop and realize they are family. I saw cousins who i had not seen in 15 years. i also went to a couple of b-ball games my cousin jon played in. He goes to Albuquerque Academy and they played a game at my old high school West Mesa. I could not pass that up.

It was fun to run around the ol' alma mater. The place has not changed all that much. The game was fun but i think that due to the fact that all of the west mesa freshman squad were 10 years past puberty academy was punished. My Aunt doesn't think the academy coach knows how to sub players.
I ate some great food but did not shoot flix of it. Didn't even think about doin it. honest. i swear.
If you are in 'buerque stop in at El Charritos on central and 47th. Best damn food i've had in a while.
I had heard that there was an amazing art show at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It was posters culled from the Sam L. Slick Collection of Latin American and Iberian Posters. I couldn't get any flix but those links should have plenty. there was also a piece by one of my favorite artists, Chaz Bojorquez.

I Like Ur Art: Saatchi Creates an Online Hangout for Artists

Julie Ann Travis , 23, a graduate student at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, is curious to see what her peers are up to and to share some of her latest work. So recently she posted a self-portrait in which her head is buried in a pile of dirt at Stuart

The brainchild of the London-based advertising magnate and collector Charles Saatchi, this social networking outlet — a kind of MySpace knockoff for artists — is causing something of a sensation, boosting traffic at the gallery’s Web site overall to more than three million hits a day.

In May Mr. Saatchi, famed for spotting young unknowns and turning them into art-world superstars, created a section on his Web site for artists of all ages to post their work at no charge. It is called Your Gallery, and now boasts contributions by about 20,700 artists, including 2,000 pieces of video art.

Everything there is for sale, with neither the buyer nor the seller paying a cent to any dealer or other middleman. About 800 new artists have been signing up each week.

And since Stuart (shorthand for “student art”) went online last month, some 1,300 students (including 450 in the United States) have created Web pages there. No one vets the quality or style of the art.

With dealers and collectors scouring student shows for undiscovered talent and students hunting for dealers to represent them, Mr. Saatchi has tapped a vein that can’t stop gushing. If Stuart gains anything like the cachet of MySpace, it has the potential to morph from a nonprofit venture into a gold mine for Mr. Saatchi.

For now, he said, he is simply enjoying the role of spectator. “When I launched the site, I took the view that the best thing was to leave it alone for the first year and purposely not buy anything, because I didn’t want to compromise what the site was supposed to do: appeal to a wide group of students,” he said.

His office, meanwhile, is fielding e-mail messages and calls from dealers, museum curators and directors, and collectors around the world who have discovered new work at the site and want to meet some of the artists in their studios. (Of the 20,700 or so artists at Your Gallery, roughly 6,000 are from Britain and 6,000 from the United States, with the rest scattered across the world.)

I hope you guys have heard about the amazing artshow happening in NYC this weekend. The folks at Wooster Collective have organized a group showing of the worlds most notorious street artists in a cool, formerly abandoned but soon to be high end condos building in Manhattan. Being a gallerist gives a special insight into how exciting it must be to create a show on this scale with absolutely zero commercial pressures. Well here is a cool flickr pool about the show. One thought I had was ......could this be the end for street art in NYC? The powers that be always give you a last meal before they execute you.

Art Army® series, “The Guerilla Crew”. The Art Army® action figures are homages to the killer art and artists that rock our world. Instead of making boring normal art, Leavitt is paying tribute to great people and work. This is no customization hobby, and it also ain't some profound artistic statement. The one-off figures are each original, fully posable mini sculptures engineered for major articulation. They look like real toys, but no Art Army® figure is machine manufactured. These action figures don't fit in any molds. Each is sculpted from scratch as one artists' offering to an icon. The “Guerilla Crew” is Mikes tribute to the vibrant street/ urban art community featuring legends of graffiti, skateboarding, Hip Hop, and street fashion. For this show Mike has sculpted figurines of
Banksy, Twist, Seen, Tupac, Nigo, Basquiat, Lady Pink, ODB, Fafi, and more.

We are also proud to present new works from three very talented painters,
Kristian Olson (Los Angeles), Colin Johnson (Minnesota), and Chris Huth ( Denver/Seattle). All three of these artists have been getting attention individually for their unique approach to the craft of painting. Kristian Olson has developed a mixed media technique for his work. Combining elaborately designed digital artwork, giclée printing, and acrylic paint he creates otherworldly entities and structures that beg for exploration.
Colin Johnson utilizes an interesting combination of collage and more painterly techniques that transitions between otherworldly and folkart. Chris Huth brings a more street level approach to his work, having once been active in the graffiti world. He is now pushing towards a more refined look to his work leaving behind the ubiquitous drips and clouds that typify graffiti inspired artwork while retaining his strong graphic style.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present “Hard Light”, an exhibition of new works by Robert Hardgrave and Warren Dykeman, two of the most impressive talents to emerge from the Seattle urban contemporary arts movement. Both of these artists have worked with the prestigious Los Angeles gallery BLK/MRKT, Warren Dykeman was included in the genre defining BM01 group show and subsequent book in January 2006 and Robert Hardgrave with a very successful show there this past July. These two artists are a testament to the diverse and unique range of talents that have emerged in the past few years here in Seattle that are gaining recognition nationally.

"Substrate" Robert Hardgrave 2006

Robert Hardgraves current work deals with death in an positive light. They are ideas about reincarnation and life beyond death, often reflecting about the cadaveric donor and the life he lead on borrowed time. Roberts work has been informed by his own health issues, in 2003 he received a new kidney from a cadaveric donor which soon after developed Lymphoma due to medication complications. Discovering six months of chemotherapy were necessary, he decided that if he was able to plow through this obstacle, he would treat himself to making art full time. In November of 2003, Robert was considered in remission and today he is living the life disease awakened. Regarding his work Robert quotes Carl Jung, “As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.”

"Hoser" Warren Dykeman 2006

A fascination with merging industrial textures, illustration, street art and commercial art compels Warren Dykeman to paint. An avid cyclist, His paintings and drawings are combinations of imagery culled from his rides through trainyards, hand sign lettering seen on the road, his sketch books and snippets of conversations heard in passing. Warrens recent work incorporates a kind of coded visual language reminiscent of the “Hobo” art that is seen on the sides of boxcars, a language that was developed to communicate locations or situations that could either harm or benefit other rail enthusiasts in plain view. Warren Dykemnan received a BFA from Western Washington University with an emphasis on painting and graphic art and is a full-time Graphic Artist in downtown Seattle.

“Quality of Life (2005)” by Benjamin Morgan; starring Brian Burnam and Lane Garrison

Meet Michael "Heir" Rosario and Curtis "Vain" Smith, the most prolific and talented graffiti writers from the Mission District in San Francisco. At age ten, in a desperate search for fame and identity, the young friends began writing their names on surrounding urban landscapes. More than a decade later, the duo have evolved into a brilliant team of street artists. The two have covertly decorated the canvases of concrete and steel throughout the Bay Area. However, when Heir and Vain are arrested for painting, their secret identities are revealed and creative outlets are abruptly severed.

“Barnstormers 360 (2006)” by The Barnstormers

Filmed in 2004 in Cameron, NC and the Southeast Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC, this 30-minute DVD captures the Barnstormers’ disassembly of a 1930’s era 16 x 16 x 23 foot tobacco barn, its reassembly in the museum, the painting of over twenty murals on its side, and its eventual reconstruction in Cameron.
Artists include David Ellis, Mike Houston,. Martin Mazorra, Chuck Webster, Kami, Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Sasu, West One, Jose Parla, and many others.
Out of the seven time-lapse films the Barnstormers have done, this represents the most ambitious effort to date, combining carpentry and painting, both indoors and outdoors.

“Fish Tales (2006)” by Eric Noren, Jeremy Fish

A tale of epic proportions about an infamous Urban Fisherman scouring the
streets of San Francisco for his fabled dream catch, “The one that got
away”. Come with us on a journey that turns the city upside-down to find
the world’s first skateable fish.
Skateable fish? Yeah that’s right! Can you actually bomb hills on a fish?
Can a nollie nose-manual at 3rd and Army actually be done with rubber
pants? If you switch back-tail a ledge, do you need to ride the board
backwards because fish lips are too slippery? Will any other skate super
heroes be encountered? Sit back and enjoy.
Directed by independent film maker Eric Noren and scored to an original
song by Aesop Rock, “Fishtales” is the brainchild of Jeremy Fish and
was created to accompany a board series that he made for Element
Skateboards.

David is one of the most diverse and prolific artists working today. One of the youngest artists to ever have a solo show at the MOCA. He has had his art shown on every surface from canvases to human bodies, to third world war torn walls, his art can be found in every facet of society, from galleries ,museums, t-shirts, shoes, movies, billboards, cars, murals, buildings, from New York city to the Congo, Africa to everywhere in between. Davids personality and work is often at odds with the polite conventions of the art world, crossing the artificial boundaries that seperate fine art from street art. He has designed and created murals, movie sets, movie posters, album covers, shoes, t-shirts, toys, calendars, commercials, cars, magazines, books, illustrations for porn and childrens story books, comics, and animation approaching each project with the same level of genius and the boundless energy that he has become known for. Over the course of his career, David Choe has become as known for his personal exploits as his artwork. Davids approach to life, like his art, is one in which no apologies are made. This has left him the target to personal attacks as well as the subject of a documentary, Dirty Hands ,that is currently in production and slated for release in 2007.

"Natural Selection" brings together 3 of the Northwest's top Urban Contemporary artists whose work straddles the line between urban and rural, mundane and mythical. Iosefatu Sua has for the past few years been busy creating the fictional South Pacific Island of PEPELO, inhabited by the Sole', a downtrodden people that represent Sua's experiences of being an immigrant to the United States. His current work represents a major shift in style and direction as he now focuses on the pantheon of the Sole' utilizing the rich colors and often macabre imagery of Buddhist religious icons and the deep traditions of his Samoan heritage. Sam Sneke has been involved for the past 15 years with what he calls "Stylewriting" but is commonly, some say mistakenly, called "Graffiti". Three years ago Sam made the shift to working with galleries first by making paintings on canvas utilizing the shapes and visual vernacular of his mural work. Since 2004 Sam has been moving away from his aerosol abstractions and more towards a sculptural relief style utilizing multiple layers of wood in which he reinterprets images from his sketchbook and pop culture in three dimensions as if the wildstyle pieces were jumping off the wall to protect their territory. Aaron Martin a/k/a Angry Woebots, a resident of Hawaii and on occasion of Seattle, brings a Street pop style to his paintings of anthropomorphic animals that reflect the complex emotions of relationships defined by the dominance of others. All three of these artists work deal with their personal relationship with the natural world as well as the nature of mankind.

I just heard Desmond Dekker died today........Wow. I loved his voice, His songs are forever going to be in my heart.

LONDON - Desmond Dekker, who brought the sound of Jamaican ska music to the world with songs such as "Israelites," has died, his manager said Friday. He was 64.
Dekker, who lived in England, collapsed from an apparent heart attack at his home on Thursday, manager Delroy Williams said. "It is such a shock, I don't think I will ever get over this," Williams said.

Their efforts are not completely unlike the new War On Terror in the Middle East where every smiling face hides a potential “person of interest.” It’s hard to target the real enemy because they mostly all look like regular citizens.

BLVD Gallery is proud to present for its inaugural show, “Groundswell”, a diverse collection of some the most exciting artists of the Urban Contemporary movement. These artists have literally made their mark across the globe helping to create what has become the predominant visual art form of modern urban culture using the visual vernacular of graffiti, pop culture, and fine art with the viral strategies of mass marketing. This show is meant to serve as an introduction to the incredible depth of the Urban Contemporary art community and the ongoing aesthetic that BLVD Gallery wishes to promote.
Participating in this show are pioneers of the “Street Art” world, as well as individuals who recontextualize the visual language of the city to create a new visual expression that is spiritually rooted in folk art but is undeniably “Fine” art. Though the art may appear incredibly varied there is a thread of modernism that connects all of the work together and gives it an accessibility that is often missing from more conceptual endeavors.

I have been watching The Exchange for a while now and thought I would share it with all y'all. A graffiti artist named Jersey Joe hosts a kind of cultural trade amongst some of the worlds great graffiti writers who trade sketches that are to be painted at a later date. It is definately interesting to see these masters interpretations of peoples names, as well as the final products. Definately good times

You gotta represent this saturday night for the man, Wil Moe who will be showing his art at 35th North skateshop on Capitol Hill. Wil, a street artist who recently had a tragic accident that caused him to lose his right arm and the use of his legs, has been rehabilitating himself by learning how to draw with his left and this show is his first under these newconditions. So yo if you see the realness be there. 35th is at the corner of 11th and pine. The reception starts at 7pm.

I simply cannot get enough of this tribute site to Del mar Skateboard Ranch. When I first started to get really into skating this place was the Mecca alongside Upland Pipeline. The sickness that came out of these spots is insane. I love skateboarding. I can't believe it's been a part of my life for 20 years.
